Ferguson Marine to be Brought into Public Ownership
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the reported announcement that the Scottish Government is now in final discussions to conclude the purchase of Ferguson Marine shipyard in Port Glasgow; believes that this is fantastic news for the town and Inverclyde as a whole, the workforce and the shipbuilding industry in Scotland; considers that the last few months have been fraught with uncertainty for the staff at the yard; believes that, thanks to the Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Economy and Fair Work, with the support of the GMB Union, jobs have been saved and shipbuilding on the Lower Clyde has a future; applauds the Scottish Government for taking what it sees as decisive action in August 2019 to secure the immediate future of the yard; considers that this is an opportunity to seek further investment and for more vessels to be built and refurbished at the yard, which it believes will benefit the island communities that rely on ferry transport, and looks forward to a future where ships will continue to be launched in Port Glasgow.
