Poverty, A Work in Progress
The motion
That the Parliament notes the Joseph Rowntree Foundation report, Poverty in Scotland 2019; understands that, over the last 20 years since devolution, poverty has dropped by 4% and, in comparison to the rest of the UK, there are significantly lower levels of poverty in Scotland; believes that the main reasons for these differences are in relation to social housing, where the Scottish Government has ended the right to buy and instigated what it considers a huge increase in council house building and committing to constructing 50,000 new homes in the current parliamentary session; considers that, with an increase in devolved social security powers, there will be continued improvements in poverty levels, but accepts that there is still a long way to go to create a fairer society.
