Girlguiding Plastic Promise Campaign

That the Parliament commends Girlguiding UK on the launch of its plastic promise campaign; understands that this campaign came from the Girlguiding Girls’ Attitudes Survey, which found that 86% of women aged between 11 and 21 think that young people should be more active in conversations about the environment; believes the campaign to be the biggest ever girl-led campaign to tackle plastic pollution, with around half a million Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers and volunteers across the UK taking part; is concerned that 2.5 million disposable coffee cups are thrown away in the UK every year and around 15 million plastic bottles are littered, landfilled or incinerated; notes that, as part of their action, Girlguiding groups were encouraged to lead pack meetings on themes surrounding plastic pollution, including Stonehouse Guides who, as part of their campaign, brought 236 pieces of plastic measuring 42 metres in length to their meeting, highlighting the need for action now to combat the 300 million tonnes of plastic being used every year; further notes that Climate Week Scotland runs from 7 to 13 October 2019, and encourages politicians to sign up to one or all of the plastic promises, which are to use a reusable water bottle, use an alternative to disposable cutlery, use a reusable box or wrap instead clingfilm, use a reusable coffee cup, and speak out about reducing plastic waste.
