80th Anniversary of the Sinking of HMS Royal Oak

The motion

That the Parliament notes that the 14 October 2019 marked the 80th anniversary of the sinking of HMS Royal Oak, which was torpedoed by the German submarine U-47 while anchored in Scapa Flow in Orkney, resulting in the loss of over 800 lives; recognises, thanks and pays tribute to the sacrifice of those who died; acknowledges that Orcadians continue to remember the tragedy, marking the anniversary each year with reflection and respect; believes that the Churchill barriers, which were built as a result of the attack and link the islands of Lambs Holm, Glimps Holm, Burray and South Ronaldsay to Mainland Orkney, serve as a constant reminder of the tragedy; notes that the site, which remains a designated war grave, has recently been surveyed by volunteer divers who are embarking on a project to create a 3D-map of the area to help establish further detail about the sinking; thanks all involved in the commemoration of this day, but, above all, remembers the sacrifice of hundreds of sailors, whose lives were cut short.
