The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Increases the Number of Women Firefighters
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) on significantly increasing the number of women applying to become firefighters; notes that this increase has arisen following a successful recruitment campaign in 2019, which saw more than 771 females apply, more than doubling the numbers received in previous years; understands that, as a result, 31 of the first intake of 84 new firefighters who began their training in September, were women; acknowledges that the SFRS has also seen an increase in the number of applications from ethnic minorities and LGBTQ+ people; notes that the applications were shortlisted "blindly", meaning that no identifying data was made available, such as names, gender, age, ethnicity or sexuality, and praises the SFRS for encouraging under-represented groups to apply and, in doing so, reflecting the very rich and diverse communities they serve.
