National Records of Scotland Projections
The motion
That the Parliament notes the National Records of Scotland’s projections, which predict serious demographic challenges for Scotland in the coming decades; acknowledges predictions that there will be 240,000 more people of pension age by 2043 than today, which is a 23.2% increase, coinciding with a 7,000 drop in the numbers of those of working age; recognises what it sees as the importance of inward migration as a mechanism for counteracting Scotland’s ageing population; appreciates the threat that it considers Brexit poses to the level of inward migration to Scotland, and notes the statement by Michael Gove, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, that the UK Government will “ensure that there is access to labour for every sector of our economy”, but nevertheless backs calls by the Scottish Government for immigration to be devolved.
