CBD Oil and Consumer Protection

That the Parliament notes with some concern a recent Which? article on cannabidiol (CBD), "CBD: snake oil or miracle cure", which suggests that consumers are not being provided with reliable and accurate product information when purchasing CBD oil; considers that CBD oil has become one of the largest health crazes, with a market value of £300 million per year due to its believed wide-ranging health benefits; further considers that these apparent health benefits are not scientifically proven, however, nevertheless play on the mind of consumers; understands that, as a food supplement, CBD oil is subject to less stringent food standards regulations than the tougher clinical trials for licensed medicinal products; believes from the Which? article that a 30ml bottle of CBD oil can cost as much as £80 and yet, it believes, with no agreed standards of testing and the unreliability and inaccuracy of labelling, consumers may be paying for a product that does not contain the level of CBD claimed, and further believes that legislation is required to create agreed standards and a common testing methodology in order to protect consumers.
