Tackling the Silent Killer

The motion

That the Parliament applauds the dedicated scholarship of researchers at the University of Dundee’s School of Medicine for their recent findings on fighting the "silent killer" of abdominal aortic aneurysms; understands that these aneurysms affect 1% of men over the age of 65, cause 5,000 deaths in the UK each year and are responsible for one in 75 deaths of men over 65; appreciates that the research team has devised a test that detects the presence of desmosine, which is an indicator of diseased aortas; shares the team’s hopes that this test can improve the diagnosis and monitoring of aortic aneurysms; regards the biomedical research sector of the Scottish economy, which it understands contributes £2.4 billion each year and employs over 39,000 people, as one of its most important, and encourages the University of Dundee School of Medicine’s research team in its continued efforts.
