Margaret Tait Honoured in St Magnus Cathedral

That the Parliament acknowledges that Margaret Tait has become the first Orkney woman to be honoured with a commemorative plaque in St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall; recognises that Margaret, who was a film-maker and poet, is only the ninth person to have their name adorned on the wall in St Rognvald’s Chapel, situated above John Rae’s Statue, which pays tribute to Orcadians who have achieved success and recognition in the creative arts; acknowledges that Margaret was well known for her films, which were notably inspired by Orkney’s landscape and culture; understands that the unveiling of her plaque took place on what would have been Margaret’s 101st birthday, with members of her family and the Lord Lieutenant, Bill Spence, President of The Friends of St Magnus Cathedral, in attendance, and hopes that this commemoration of Margaret Tait will raise wider public awareness about her life and work as well as act as an inspiration to other women in Orkney, who may come to have their names honoured with a commemorative plaque in St Magnus Cathedral in future.
