International Transgender Day of Remembrance

The motion

That the Parliament notes that 20 November 2019 marks the International Transgender Day of Remembrance; understands that the aim of the day, which has taken place since 1999 and was started by Gwendolyn Ann Smith to honour Rita Hester, who was killed the year before because of her gender identity, is to stand in solidarity with trans people around the world who have experienced violence, abuse, intimidation, hatred or persecution because of their gender identity; understands that international levels of suicide are particularly high among trans people, with a study from the Williams Institute showing the suicide rate among transgender adults equates to 800 per 100,000 worldwide; considers that Scotland is an inclusive and welcoming society, with diverse communities made up of people from different ethnic backgrounds, of different gender identities and of different sexual orientations, and stresses the importance of sensible and reasoned discussion and debate when it comes to social issues within Scottish society, and the need to listen to, value and be open to opinions from different organisations and groups of people in order to reach legislative and policy decisions that are inclusive and which work in the interests of diversity.
