The motion

That the Parliament recognises the 40th anniversary of the exceptional service given by the crew of the R A Colby Cubbin No. 3 lifeboat, who responded on 18 November 1979 to aid a Danish coaster in stormy seas with waves around 30 ft high and hurricane force 12 winds, described as diabolical by the investigator, during which the lifeboat capsized in transit and was righted by an innovative, novel air bag system; understands that subsequently ropes rendered the propeller unusable, stranding the men at sea to be rescued by an RAF helicopter and an Eriskay trawler; commends the men, John Allan MacNeil, Callum Clelland, John MacNeil, Paul Hillhouse, Donald Joseph Gillies, Joseph MacLeod, Michael MacNeil and Roddy MacLean, for their bravery 40 years ago, and looks forward to commemorating these heroes in the future with a plaque at the new lifeboat station in Castlebay, Barra.
