Success for Nairne Gillespie from Inverclyde at the Mission Discovery Programme
The motion
That the Parliament commends Nairne Gillespie, who is an S4 pupil at Clydeview Academy, on taking part in the Mission Discovery programme, which is run by the University of the West of Scotland in partnership with the International Space School Education Trust; recognises that Nairne’s team, the Interstellar Intellectuals, won the competition with an experiment that explores whether artificially increasing root pressure could improve plant growth on the International Space Station; notes that this will now be put to the test; understands that, as well as working on experiments, Nairne also learned more about what life is like in space from Dr Michael Foale, who is considered to be the most experienced British-born astronaut ever and who gave some tips to the pupils, including encouraging them to get involved with their local air cadets; acknowledges that Nairne has taken this on board and has joined the Greenock Air Cadets; believes that programmes such as Mission Discovery help encourage young people to consider careers in STEM, and wishes Nairne well.
