CEDAW’s 40th Anniversary

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges the 40th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), which will be marked on 18 December 2019; notes the impact of CEDAW on women’s human rights in Scotland and around the world and what it sees as its vital importance as a Bill of Rights for Women in demanding that states respect, protect and fulfil their human rights and recognise the root causes of sex discrimination; recognises that CEDAW holds state parties to account for their efforts to implement measures to realise substantive gender equality; acknowledges that equality of opportunity and equal treatment is not enough to redress generations of women’s inequality; welcomes the participation of the Scottish Government and Scotland's women’s organisations, coordinated by Engender, in the UN CEDAW Committee’s most recent examination of the UK; notes the Committee’s recommendations; welcomes the steps that Scotland has taken to realise gender equality, and believes that incorporation of CEDAW into Scots law would further enable women to access and enforce their human rights.
