Older People Given a Voice in Dumfries and Galloway Council
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Dumfries and Galloway Council on appointing an Older Persons Champion to promote older people’s interests and causes across the local authority area; notes that the Council unanimously agreed on the appointment of local Councillor, Andy Ferguson, and that since being appointed in December 2019, Councillor Ferguson has already been invited to take up a seat in the Scottish Older People’s Assembly; notes the importance of local authorities having a champion to support, assist and further the needs of older people in Dumfries and Galloway, a large rural area with distinct opportunities and challenges, such as social isolation and loneliness, which disproportionately affect older people; wishes Councillor Ferguson every success in his role, and encourages other Scottish local authorities to consider taking similar steps to promote the voices of older people at local authority level.
