Wemyss Bay Primary, UNICEF Gold Rights Respecting School
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Wemyss Bay Primary School on being named as a UNICEF Gold Rights Respecting School in recognition of its staff and pupils forging close ties with Kukar Pind Public School, which is around 5,000 miles away in northern India, as part of its efforts to have the rights of every child recognised and respected; notes that the link was established by a teacher at the primary, Ama Kaur, who has visited the village of Kukar Pind several times over the last 10 years; acknowledges that Ama plans to further strengthen the ties by arranging a further visit at Easter 2020; recognises that the Inverclyde school achieved silver status three years ago and has been working hard since to earn gold; appreciates that as part of this, board games and rights-respecting books made by its pupils will be gifted to the Kukar Pind school; believes that schemes such as this help children deepen their understanding of rights, values and global citizenship, and hopes that other schools in Inverclyde and across Scotland will be encouraged to take part in the Rights Respecting Award scheme.
