Supporting the Musical and Literary Traditions of the North East
The motion
That the Parliament celebrates the 25th anniversary of the University of Aberdeen’s Elphinstone Institute, which is a centre for the study of ethnology, folklore and ethnomusicology; notes that the institute was created in 1995 in order to sustain and share the traditions of the north east with the wider world; supports its work in gaining increased recognition of Doric and giving rise to the Doric Board; welcomes the role of the institute in supporting the musical and literary traditions of the north east with popular events such as the North Atlantic Fiddle Convention; acknowledges that a key part of its remit is public engagement and working in partnership with local organisations and individuals by means of community initiatives, public events and participative workshops; recognises the institute’s international reputation for academic research and promoting cultural provision, community building and social prescription, and wishes it continued success.
