The motion

That the Parliament notes the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Elphinstone Institute at the University of Aberdeen; commends the immense contribution of staff and students throughout this period towards the study of identity, heritage and culture, including that of travellers; recognises the Institute’s commitment to public engagement, which it considers enriches north east society’s bonds with its Doric vernacular; notes the important role that celebrating heritage and culture can play in supporting tourism, economic growth and population retention for the region; understands that a celebratory event marking the anniversary took place on 23 January 2020 at the Institute, and included a poetry recital from the north east makar, Sheena Blackhall, and a special composition played by the fiddler, Paul Anderson; congratulates all involved at the Institute on a successful and productive 25 years, and sends its best wishes for continued success in the years to come.
