Golfer Speaks Out about his Alcoholism
The motion
That the Parliament praises Stewart Savage, who is the professional at Dalmuir Golf Club, for speaking out about his alcoholism; acknowledges that, in an interview in The Herald,Stewart said that he experienced a “ravaging dependency” after his alcohol use spiralled out of control when he was 18 and that this was followed by 18 years with an addiction that he described as a “ball and chain”; understands that 2020 marks Stewart being sober for the last 18 years and that he is talking about his alcoholism to help others who might be in a similar situation to the one that he was previously in; applauds him for talking publicly about deeply personal experiences that it believes dramatically affected his own and his family’s lives; agrees that such an approach plays an important part in helping others seek the assistance that they need to tackle alcoholism and other addictions; wishes Stewart, who helps people to recover at the Addiction Recovery Centre in Kirkintilloch, well for the future, and agrees that stories such as his are vital to tackling the detrimental and often fatal scourge of alcoholism in Scotland.
