Over 22,000 Whisky Jobs at Risk Due to US Tariffs

The motion

That the Parliament notes new research by the GMB union, which has highlighted that over 22,000 jobs continue to be put at risk due to United States import tariffs of 25% on single malt Scotch Whisky and Scotch Whisky liqueurs; understands that the research shows the spirits industry in Scotland employs 9,000 people directly, with a further 14,700 jobs in the supply chain across the UK; welcomes the recent news from the Scotch Whisky Association showing that global exports have grown by 4.4% to £4.91 billion, with growth in 106 of its global markets; notes that the growth was driven, particularly in Asia and Africa, with value increases of 9.8% and 11.3% respectively; understands that the continuation of the 25% tariff means the outlook for the industry remains uncertain, and calls on the UK Government to work with the GMB and the Scotch Whisky Association to demand that the United States ends these tariffs.
