William Wallace Statue Conservation
The motion
That the Parliament notes that essential conservation work is set to begin on the iconic William Wallace statue at Bemersyde; understands that the statue, which was erected in 1814 and overlooks the River Tweed, is Scotland’s oldest monument to Wallace and is owned by the William Wallace Trust (WWT); acknowledges that the last conservation work was conducted in 1991, when £20,000 was raised to restore it to its original state; notes that the first phase of the new essential maintenance will begin in April 2020 and that the second phase will focus on restoration of the statue’s claymore; commends the WWT's trustees for their hard work in funding this project, and wishes them all the best for the future.
