Shiskine Scottish Women’s Institute Celebrates its 100th Anniversary
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates the Shiskine Scottish Women’s Institute (SWI) on reaching its centenary; understands that the club on the Isle of Arran was founded in 1920, just three years after the movement started in Scotland, and emboldened other Arran villages to follow suit until there were nine thriving institutes on Arran after the Second World War; notes that, while some island institutions have since ceased, the Shiskine branch continues to remain active and is a worthwhile gathering for those with similar interests; appreciates that SWI allows women with the same vision and passion for sharing and learning skills to learn a new craft or skill in a sociable and welcoming environment, meet women with similar interests on a regular basis, take part in social events and arts and craft competitions and campaign on issues that matter to their community; considers it vital that new members are not just encouraged to join but to take an active role in the development of the organisation, and wishes the Shiskine SWI the best for the years ahead.
