Food for Life Award for School Meals
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates the school catering staff of Scottish Borders Council on achieving the Soil Association Scotland’s Bronze Food for Life Served Here award for its primary school meals service; acknowledges that the award will cover 62 primary schools across the Scottish Borders serving 5,500 meals daily; understands that the bronze award recognises meals that meet 13 key standards, including being at least 75% freshly prepared from unprocessed ingredients, using only sustainable fish, free-range eggs and meat that satisfies UK animal welfare standards, containing no undesirable additives, artificial trans fats or genetically modified ingredients; notes that the Food for Life Scotland programme has been funded by the Scottish Government since 2012 with the aim of supporting local authorities to serve more Scottish produce in school meals; believes that the scheme offers a valuable framework to help councils to tackle health inequalities, support local food economies and serve sustainable school meals, and commends all of the caterers and local suppliers involved for their dedicated efforts.
