Bold Plans for Scottish SPCA Education Hub
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes plans for the Scottish SPCA to transform a former colliery building in Clackmannanshire into an education hub to bring vulnerable children closer to nature; understands that a proposed £850,000 project would see the former Devon Colliery's Beam Engine House, near to its National Wildlife Rescue Centre at Fishcross, transformed to showcase the excellent work that the charity undertakes; notes that the plans outline a vision for interactive touch screens, digital games, information boards and physical props, plus camera links that would enable people to view animals in recovery following treatment and track their release back to the wild; acknowledges that full plans for the site have now been drawn up and a major crowdfunding drive will be launched; believes that work to create the new centre is to be split into two phases, the first of which will see the building renovated at a cost of approximately £100,000, with the second phase creating a new custom-designed classroom, which is expected to cost the charity a further £750,000; believes that Clackmannan Heritage Trust has given the charity information about the history of the site, and that the Scottish SPCA wants to capture as much of this as possible in order that people will know about the venue’s architecture, engineering and industrial heritage; commends the Scottish SCPA on this project, and wishes everyone involved all the very best for its ultimate success.
