80th Anniversary of the Dunkirk Evacuation

The motion

That the Parliament recognises that 26 May to 4 June 2020 marks the 80th anniversary of the Dunkirk evacuation, which was known as Operation Dynamo and saw the evacuation of 338,000 Allied soldiers from the beaches on the northern France as a result of advancing German forces; notes that, alongside the transport ships and destroyers, 700 "little ships", which were commanded both by naval officers and civilians, took part; acknowledges that these craft were vital to the rescue and ferrying of soldiers from the shallow shores; appreciates that Scotland’s invaluable contribution of smaller vessels included the Skylark IX, which saved 600 lives; notes that the craft is believed to be Scotland’s only surviving Dunkirk ship and is in the process of restoration at the Scottish Maritime Museum, and pays tribute to everyone, military and civilian, who played a vital role in the evacuation and the remaining years of the Second World War.
