Dementia Awareness Week 2020

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges Dementia Awareness Week, which takes place between 1 and 7 June 2020 in support of people with dementia, their carers and families; notes that more than 90,000 people in Scotland live with dementia and that, while around 60% of Scotland’s care home residents have dementia and it is most common in older people, it can affect people in their 40s and 50s and younger; understands that dementia is a terminal illness that affects the brain and is an umbrella term for over 100 different types of illnesses and disease symptoms, including memory loss and difficulties with daily tasks, language and problem-solving; recognises that the COVID-19 pandemic means Dementia Awareness Week is being marked differently this year; encourages people to participate by printing, decorating and displaying Alzheimer Scotland’s forget-me-not flower in their windows and sharing photos on social media; notes that calls to Alzheimer Scotland’s 24-hour freephone dementia helpline on 0808 808 3000 have increased by 30% since lockdown, providing information, signposting and emotional support to people with dementia, families and carers; commends health and social care staff, social workers, unpaid carers, employers, charities and volunteers who work hard all year round to support people to live well with dementia, and agrees that fair dementia care in Scotland should be a reality for all.
