Volunteers Save Stranded Whales

Lodged by Dr Alasdair Allan Standard Motion 20 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament praises the volunteers who saved 10 long-finned pilot whales that beached themselves repeatedly at high tide in Loch Baghasdail, South Uist, between 12 and 13 June 2020; considers that, while seven whales did not survive, the rescue of the majority of the pod is a great achievement as it is estimated that only 5% of marine mammals survive stranding; understands that the group, comprised of local vessels from MOWI and Uist Sea Tours, were assisted by a volunteer medic from British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) on 13 June; commends the assembled team who, during the stranding the previous day, went to the aid of the pod despite no prior training and only receiving over-the-phone advice from the BDMLR hotline, and further commends the accompanying children for coaxing the rescued whales into deeper water with Gaelic song after the final stranding.
