Jo Cox Anniversary and 2020 Great Get Together
The motion
That the Parliament acknowledges that 16 June 2020 is the anniversary of the death of Jo Cox, who was murdered in 2016 while carrying out her role as the Member of Parliament for Batley and Spen; commends the Jo Cox Foundation for its work in creating a kinder, more compassionate society and for building a positive legacy for Jo in the aftermath of her tragic murder; agrees with the ethos of the Foundation, and with Jo’s belief, that people have more in common than that which divides them; acknowledges the important work of the Jo Cox Loneliness Commission and of the powerful impact of the annual Great Get Together for tackling isolation, particularly during this period of lockdown as a result of COVID-19, which it considers means that this work is as important now as it ever has been; recognises that the fourth Great Get Together weekend will take place between 19 and 21 June; recognises that, while traditional gatherings are unable to take place, there are still lots of ways that people can gather virtually to celebrate stories of communities that have supported each other throughout lockdown across the UK, and commends everyone who will take part in gatherings this weekend to celebrate the power of community.
