Get on Your Bike, but Check Your Helmet
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the NHS campaign by the major trauma coordinator at the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC), Mark Lilley, to prevent head injuries to cyclists; notes that the campaign’s key message is for cyclists, especially children, to wear a helmet when cycling, following a surge of head injuries at the RHC relative in the last year due to an increased interest in cycling; understands that, in the whole of 2019, there were only 13 children admitted to the RHC with moderate trauma related to bike accidents, while during the first three months of lockdown in 2020, 18 children were being admitted for the same reason; agrees with Mark that parents should be reminded to protect their children from serious injury by wearing a bike helmet, and thanks Mark for spearheading what it considers is an essential campaign for public safety, in light of the surge in accidents.
