UK Global Tariff Policy and the British Egg Industry
The motion
That the Parliament acknowledges that the UK Government is developing a new UK Most Favoured Nation (MFN) tariff schedule, which will begin on 1 January 2021, the UK Global Tariff (UKGT); notes that the high food safety and animal welfare standards that it considers underpin high-quality great British produce are guaranteed by schemes such as British Lion Quality and RSPCA Assured schemes; understands that the UK Government has no intention of undermining the reputation for quality of Scottish and UK produce by lowering UK food and animal welfare standards as set out in a response to the British Egg Industry Council by the UK Minister for Trade Policy, the Rt Hon Greg Hands MP; considers that the UK Government has been clear that it remains firmly committed to upholding the high environmental, food safety and animal welfare standards after leaving the EU; highlights the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018, which transferred all EU food safety provisions onto the UK statute book, including the high standards underpinning the British egg sector; notes that the UK Government also remains committed to promoting robust food safety standards nationally and internationally, to protect consumer interests, and believes that the UK Government will stand firm in trade negotiations to ensure that any future trade deals live up to the values of farmers, consumers, and businesses across the Borders, Scotland and the UK.
