Lodged by Margaret Mitchell Standard Motion 14 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the establishment of the COVID-19 Mediation Service by Scottish Mediation; notes that it aims to provide conflict resolution for people and organisations experiencing difficulties concerning social distancing or self-isolation as a result of the lockdown; acknowledges that it will be provided by a group of professional volunteer mediators; notes that, for individual people and organisations with fewer than five employees, the service will be provided free of charge; recognises the importance of mediation as an alternative to formal grievance procedures; considers that it is form of conflict resolution that can be highly beneficial to all parties by avoiding costs and delays that might occur otherwise and allowing for innovative solutions to disputes; understands that participation in mediation is voluntary and that the parties are actively involved in the decisions that lead to the dispute being resolved; welcomes news that the service is supported by the Scottish Government Wellbeing Fund; hopes that it will help bring timely resolution of disputes, and encourage greater use of mediation in Central Scotland and the rest of the country.
