24/7 Samaritans Awareness Day 2020
The motion
That the Parliament acknowledges 24/7 Samaritans Awareness Day on 24 July 2020; notes that this year’s event is named “The Big Listen” and that it aims to highlight that, every six seconds, the charity answers a call for help and that it is there to provide help 24/7 for anyone who is struggling to cope and needs someone to listen without judgement or pressure; considers that Samaritans is not only for the moment of crisis but preventing it arising in the first place, helping to give people ways to cope and the skills to be there for others, as well as encouraging, promoting and celebrating those moments of connection between people, which can save lives; understands that it offers support not only to people in communities in times of need but also those in prisons, schools, hospitals and on the rail network; believes that now, more than ever, Samaritans needs people’s help in the form of donations and that, to mark 24/7 Samaritans Awareness Day, many people across Scotland and the UK are holding their own fundraising events; encourages everyone to get involved, and commends the charity for its tireless work to reach out to more people and to make suicide prevention a priority.
