Support for Scottish Trout Producers

The motion

That the Parliament considers that not all trout producers in Scotland have been supported during the COVID-19 pandemic, with some refused grants from the Aquaculture Hardship Fund; understands that the Scottish Government has refused these applications on the basis of the fisheries having some output for recreational use; further understands that such fisheries supply trout for a range of reasons, including supplying fish farms, as well as lochs for game fishing; believes that these farms do therefore form a key part of the food supply chain; appreciates the value that these businesses bring to the local economy, particularly in rural areas; considers that, as businesses involved in the keeping of live fish, the lives of those fish are at risk over the coming winter months unless adequate support is provided; understands that, as the UK leaves the EU, the European Commission’s Temporary Framework on State Aid will no longer apply to the UK, leaving the Scottish and UK governments free to implement support packages of their choice, and asks the Scottish Government to consider alternative funding arrangements to support this important aquaculture businesses in the immediate future.
