The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that Chile has voted by a large majority to rewrite its constitution; notes that an early count suggests that around 78% have voted for this; understands that its government agreed to the referendum in November 2019 following a month of daily protests against inequality in Chilean society; acknowledges that one of the key demands of the protestors was to reform the dictatorship-era constitution, which placed the private sector in charge of health, education, housing and pensions; believes that this entrenched inequality; understands that the current constitution was created in 1980 by the dictator, Augusto Pinochet, who had come to power after he had ousted a democratically-elected government; believes that his regime was responsible for the murder and detention of left and progressive forces in Chile, and considers that this referendum is a major victory for democracy in Chile and against the dark legacy of Pinochet.
