Catalonian Independence Supporters Arrested in Operation Volkhov

Lodged by John Finnie Standard Motion 11 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament notes with concern the reported arrest of several people involved in the campaign for Catalonian independence; understands that among those detained are Josep Alay, who served as head of office for the former Catalan President, Carles Puigdemont; further understands that the Spanish police operation was named Volkhov in reference to a battle in which Spanish volunteers fought alongside Nazi forces; considers this a distasteful and inappropriate name for a civilian police operation; understands that many pro-Catalan independence politicians and activists remain in prison, and supports the President of the Catalonian Parliament’s reported call for an amnesty for those jailed for their involvement in the 2017 independence referendum.
