The motion

That the Parliament notes the work of a range of animal welfare and agricultural organisations across Scotland, such as the Scottish SPCA and National Framers Union Scotland, to promote awareness of the dangers and stress caused to animals by fireworks ahead of Bonfire Night on 5 November 2020; notes that fireworks and, in particular, private and non-organised firework displays cause stress and anxiety to both domestic and livestock animals, and that, in some cases, animals come to harm and even death as a result of fireworks; further notes that animal welfare organisations report numerous complaints at this time of year from animal owners and those concerned about animals in distress due to them having more sensitive hearing, causing them to flee from their owners, fields or homes; calls on animal owners to follow the available advice to stable horses, bring rabbits and cats indoors, and to walk dogs during the day, and calls on the public to be responsible if they intend to use fireworks, to be mindful of any animals within their immediate proximity, and to follow all guidance from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service on the use of fireworks.
