25th Anniversary of the Disability Discrimination Act

The motion

That the Parliament recognises that 8 November 2020 marked the 25th anniversary of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 receiving Royal Assent; notes that this Act made discrimination against disabled people unlawful in the UK; understands that that one in five people are disabled; acknowledges that discrimination against disabled people still exists today, often through so-called able-ist language and goods and services that are created without any consideration for disabled people and their needs; recognises that the BBC is marking this anniversary with dedicated content that puts the stories of disabled people and artists front and centre; notes that the Corporation will also host Reframing Disability on 19 November, during which there will be a series of discussions from disabled writers, producers, actors, directors, presenters and global thought leaders, and endeavours to improve its approach to supporting disabled people and to help tackle the discrimination that they face every day.
