That the Parliament acknowledges Electrical Fire Safety Week, which for 2020 runs from 23 to 29 November; notes that the charity, Electrical Safety First, works to promote electrical fire safety in the home; understands that, during Electrical Fire Safety Week, the charity works closely with the UK and Scottish governments, as well as fire and rescue services across the country to raise awareness of electrical fire risks and the simple steps that people can take to avoid a devastating fire in their homes; notes that the charity’s campaigns offer general safety messages as well as focusing on areas in the home and specific types of product that offer a particular risk; believes that there is a particular importance for older or more vulnerable customers having their electrical appliances checked for safety prior to the onset of winter; understands the additional importance of purchasing electrical products, including Christmas decorations and lights, from well known, warranted and reputable manufactures and authorised vendors; acknowledges the official figures that state that older people are at a greater risk from fires in the home than any other age group; commends the work of Electrical Safety First in ensuring that everyone across Scotland understands the importance of electrical safety and that this remains a priority for consumers, trade and government, and acknowledges the charity’s campaigning on behalf of consumers and electrical trade professionals to improve safety regulation and ensure safety messages are appropriate, up to date and well communicated.
