Aldi Champions Galloway Beef
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Aldi on championing Dumfries and Galloway’s iconic native cattle breed with the launch of a trio of Scotch Galloway Beef joints in all 96 of its stores in Scotland for the festive season; understands that the Galloway is one of the oldest native cattle breeds in the world, but that Galloway beef is rarely available in supermarkets, which makes what it sees as Aldi’s strong offering incredibly exciting and unique; notes that, in 2017, the Galloway was officially categorised by DEFRA as one of the UK cattle breeds at risk, which meant that the number of registered breeding females across the UK had dropped below 3,000; understands that efforts such as this from Aldi encourage demand for the brand and therefore help towards creating a sustainable model of the breed throughout Scotland and beyond; notes that the backing by Aldi has been described as transformative by the Galloway Cattle Society, which believes that this will be the start of a process that will ultimately lead to Galloway Beef becoming widely recognised as a premium brand; congratulates the Cattle Society and all Galloway breed cattle farmers across Dumfries and Galloway for their incredibly hard work to get to this point, and encourages everyone to support the brand by buying Galloway Beef from Aldi this festive season.
