H100 Fife
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates H100 Fife, which is a world-first 100% green hydrogen project developed by the gas distribution company, SGN, on securing up to £18 million of funding in Ofgem’s annual Network Innovation Competition; notes that hydrogen will be used instead of natural gas for cooking and heating in 300 Fife households and will be produced by a dedicated electrolysis plant, powered by a nearby offshore wind turbine; recognises that this hydrogen network in Levenmouth will bring 100% renewable hydrogen into homes in 2022, providing zero-carbon fuel for heating and cooking; understands that central heating is responsible for up to a third of the UK’s greenhouse gas output, and is a challenge that must be solved if the Scottish Government’s net-zero targets are to be met, and believes that switching from carbon-emitting natural gas to hydrogen, which does not produce carbon when it burns, is one of the ways to keep homes and businesses heated while making ground in the fight against the climate emergency.
