Small Business Saturday
The motion
That the Parliament acknowledges Small Business Saturday 2020, which is on 5 December; notes that Small Business Saturday is a grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to "shop local" and support small businesses in their communities; further notes that the day takes place on the first Saturday in December each year, but aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses; considers that it is vitally important, now more than ever, to support all forms of small businesses during the current COVID-19 pandemic; encourages everyone to become involved and to support family businesses, local shops, online businesses, wholesalers, business services or small manufacturers; acknowledges that key industries such as hospitality, tourism and retail have been warning that thousands of jobs could be lost in the coming months due to the slump in demand and continued social distancing measures; considers that every decision that people take over the coming weeks, from spending money in local stores, supporting locally-run cafes and paying for local traders to fix household appliances, will make a big difference to the fortunes and prospects of local businesses in Scotland, including in Mid Scotland and Fife, and particularly going into winter; believes that community contribution to the health and wellbeing of high streets will be essential for local economies as they emerge from the pandemic, and commends everyone involved with Small Business Saturday each year for their sterling work for the benefit of local business.
