Uist Virtual Archaeology Project
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the news that the Uist Virtual Archaeology Project has appointed Peel Interactive to craft a digital app to showcase Uist’s archaeology; understands that it will include augmented reality reconstructions and mixed-media exhibitions to create a realistic and immersive experience; notes that seven archaeological sites along the Hebridean Way in Uist and Benbecula have been chosen, including Cladh Hallan, where the only prehistoric mummified remains in Great Britain were uncovered; believes that this project will help to grow interest in what it believes is the area’s unique archaeology by publicising sites such as the Bornais settlement mounds, which, it understands, might be Scotland’s largest non-urban Norse settlement; notes that archaeology is one of the main tourist draws in Na h-Eileanan an Iar, amounting to over 10% of the islands’ economy and supporting the equivalent of over 1,000 FTE jobs, and hopes that the project contributes to growing visitor numbers to Uist post-COVID-19.
