British Lung Foundation and Asthma UK Report, A Breath of Fresh Air
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation report, A Breath of Fresh Air, which provides information regarding research on the training needs of UK GPs to allow them to use the Very Brief Advice approach for smoking cessation; notes that this is a simple piece of advice that is designed to be used in less than 30 seconds in almost any situation with a smoker; understands that over 60% of GPs in Scotland have never had any training in this; believes that smoking remains the leading cause of preventable illness and death; welcomes evidence that 70% of smokers in Scotland want to quit the habit; welcomes the publication of this latest report, and considers that it will be important in providing information about the need for smoking cessation training and initiatives.
