The motion

That the Parliament welcomes Cervical Cancer Prevention Week 2021, which runs from 18 to 24 January and is aimed at raising awareness of the causes and symptoms of the condition; understands that it is the most common cancer in women under 35; acknowledges that Cervical Cancer Prevention Week is led by the charity, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and, with its #SmearForSmear campaign, aims to remove any potential barriers that may prevent women from attending screenings; highlights the importance of cervical screening as the best protection against cervical cancer; believes that COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdowns have made it harder for many to access screening; notes that research by Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust suggests that around one in 10, or 9%, say they definitely would not attend cervical screening at present, and 22% feel less likely to attend; understands that, while screening services continue across most of the country, practices in some areas are unable to carry out cervical screening, or may have less appointments available, and considers that, at a time when anxiety is high, reliable information is more important than ever.
