Celebrating the University of Aberdeen's Foodsharing Service within the Community

That the Parliament celebrates the Foodsharing Service established by student volunteers at the University of Aberdeen; notes that the service, which is part of the university’s Shared Planet Society, began by collecting food from supermarkets that could not be sold because of mislabelling or over supply, as part of the FareShare scheme at selected local stores; further notes that, prior to the pandemic, the Foodsharing Service operated in the student union building and students could visit to collect what they needed, with the main focus on reducing food sent to landfill; highlights that, when restrictions came into force, the group recognised that it could help fulfil a wider need within the local community, helping vulnerable people or those shielding due to the pandemic; acknowledges that, between March and December 2020, the group distributed hundreds of food packages and prevented around 15,000kg of food going to landfill; understands that the service is continuing to operate with volunteers who have remained in Aberdeen, and applauds the dedication of all involved, who plan to get it back up and running at full capacity once students are able to return.
