The motion

That the Parliament recognises that 4 February 2021 is World Cancer Day, a global initiative that encourages everyone to put cancer on the global agenda; understands that one in two people will get cancer in their lifetime, that great progress in research has seen survival rates double in the last 40 years, and that Cancer Research UK’s vision is to see three-quarters of people with cancer surviving the disease by 2034; notes that this World Cancer Day comes at an extremely difficult time, and recognises the efforts of third sector organisations and groups such as the Scottish Cancer Coalition to support people affected by cancer during the pandemic; understands that COVID-19 has caused significant disruption to screening, diagnosis and treatment of cancer; acknowledges the commitment and determination of NHS staff in delivering cancer services in the face of unprecedented challenges, and notes the belief that it is vital that long-term plans are made to ensure an adequate and resilient cancer workforce and achieve the best outcome for every cancer patient in Scotland.
