Live Bivalve Export Ban to the EU
The motion
That the Parliament notes with concern the indefinite ban on the export of live bivalve molluscs to the EU, following the UK’s withdrawal from the EU; understands that EU animal health legislation strictly forbids the import of live bivalve molluscs, including scallops, clams, oysters, mussels and cockles, from third countries, including the UK; notes that the European Commission had informed the shellfish sector of this position, despite assertions by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs that the ban would be lifted on 21 April 2021; further notes that UK shellfish catches were valued at £393 million in 2019; believes that the additional damage caused by the ban will cripple an already overstrained industry; urges the UK Government to redouble efforts to resolve the matter with immediacy, and considers that this impact on the Scottish fishing industry is a clear and direct consequence of the weak deal negotiated by the UK Government in becoming a third country following Brexit.
