Royston Community Pantry Established in Glasgow
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the establishment of the Royston Community Pantry in the Glasgow Maryhill and
Springburn constituency; understands that Glasgow City Council awarded £127,365
to Spire View Housing Association as part of the Scottish Government’s Town
Centre Fund; praises the work of the organisation in providing a sustainable
and longer-term option for those who are facing food insecurity, while
simultaneously striving to reduce dependence on shorter-term options, including
food bank support; applauds the partnership between the North Glasgow Community
Food Initiative and the Spire View Housing Association in producing nutritional
and high quality food items and providing these items at accessible locations
and affordable prices, therefore allowing families to allocate their income to
other necessities, such as home energy and clothing; understands that, due to a
combination of poor transport links, a hilly land surface and a low rate of car
ownership, residents have become dependent on food that is sometimes sold at
inflated prices; welcomes the work of such organisations to address this issue,
and commends the Royston Community Pantry in allowing volunteering and work
experience opportunities, that allows individuals to become involved in their
community, as well as to gain valuable skills in customer service.
