International Epilepsy Awareness Day

The motion

That the Parliament recognises that 8 February 2021 is International Epilepsy Awareness Day, which is an international awareness day that started in 2015; understands that this is a day to highlight people’s experiences with epilepsy with a view to providing the public with a better understanding of issues surrounding epilepsy; notes that those with epilepsy are often reluctant to talk about it as they feel they may be faced with discrimination in the workplace and in wider community settings; acknowledges that 65 million people around the world live with epilepsy and that each year more than 1 in 1000 people with epilepsy die from sudden unexpected death in epilepsy, known as SUDEP; further recognises that a greater public understanding of the true facts of epilepsy could lead to a renewed push for improved treatment, better care and greater investment in research, and encourages people to share and interact with the campaign online.
