The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Scottish athlete, Joanna Muir, from Haugh of Urr in Dumfries and Galloway, on her marvellous debut performance when she represented Team GB at the Tokyo Olympic Games as one of the four-strong contingent competing in the modern pentathlon, a five-discipline event that involves fencing, 200m freestyle swimming, equestrian showjumping over 15 jumps, and a combined 3,200m cross-country run and pistol shooting; understands that her selection came on the strength of a remarkable 2021 season that saw her win a silver medal in the World Cup final in Hungary, having previously won a silver medal at the Junior European Modern Pentathlon championship in 2015 and a silver medal in the women’s relay event at the 2016 World Modern Pentathlon in Moscow, before striking gold at the European Modern Pentathlon in Bath in 2019; appreciates the enormous dedication and commitment she has made to become one of the country’s leading sportswomen, and hopes that she will continue to thrive in her chosen sport in the coming years.
