The motion

That the Parliament congratulates David Sharp, who is from Menstrie, on being awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in recognition of his work within the village throughout the COVID-19 pandemic; understands that David, who is also chair of Menstrie Community Council, was presented with his medal by Lord Lieutenant Johnny Stewart at a small ceremony on 5 August 2021; acknowledges that, during the COVID-19 restrictions, David organised grant funding and donations to provide food parcels for older or vulnerable people and other residents in the village who were shielding; understands that, through this initiative, over 140 parcels were delivered each week via a substantial team of volunteers; notes that, in addition to this, David set up community support groups that looked after senior residents, and that he was instrumental in ensuring that the local VE75 commemoration went ahead, which included distributing almost 400 VE medals and goodie bags to local primary school children, and lockdown bags for secondary school pupils, as well as holding a VE afternoon tea for older residents; further notes that, as a village resident of 45 years, David hopes to continue his proactive and benevolent work through the community council, with his intention to make Menstrie an “even better place”, and commends David and all the volunteers for their sterling and tireless work for the benefit of the community.
